What to do in the first 90 days as a new IT lead

1

First 30 days: audit and understand

  • Map all systems, subscriptions, and contracts so you know what exists and what it costs.
  • Identify who actually manages each tool today and where knowledge lives (or doesn't).
  • Talk to staff about what works, what frustrates them, and what they work around daily.
2

Days 31 to 60: quick wins and documentation

  • Fix the most visible pain points first to build trust and credibility with the team.
  • Start documenting critical processes: password resets, backups, vendor contacts, and escalation paths.
  • Review security basics: are passwords strong, is MFA enabled, are backups actually tested?
3

Days 61 to 90: roadmap and vendor review

  • Build a prioritised roadmap that ties technology changes to business outcomes people care about.
  • Review vendor contracts for renewal dates, lock-in clauses, and whether you are overpaying.
  • Present your findings and plan to leadership with clear costs, timelines, and expected benefits.
